Our free produce box event was created by former EHNC President Nina Suarez in spring 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. This event was born out of a need to provide fresh produce to our community members during a time of utmost need. Following its success during the height of the pandemic, our free produce box distribution has continued.
The East Hollywood Neighborhood Council (EHNC) distributes free, fresh produce to our community members on a nearly monthly basis in partnership with the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA), and LA City Council District 13 (CD13) Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell’s office. We utilize funds from the EHNC, CHLA and CD13 to purchase the fresh produce from local farm-to-table organization Rick’s Produce Market, whose parking lot houses our event. At least once a month, except during periods of fiscal rebudgeting, volunteers from East Hollywood gather to sort, package and distribute the produce to fellow community members.
