EHNC, Community Volunteers Clean Up East Hollywood on April 26
On April 26, EHNC's first-ever community clean-up event, organized by EHNC Vice President and Neighborhood District 11 Representative Alfredo A. Hernandez, drew over 40 volunteers from the community, with the help of Hollywood Beautification Team (HBT) and L.A. Conservation Corps, to clean up the streets of East Hollywood as a post-Earth Day activity.
Most of the cleanup was concentrated in the southern and eastern ends of the community, though HBT also cleaned up other areas of the neighborhood that day.
After ctidyung up the streets in the hot, 80-plus temperature, the volunteers were treated to a free BBQ lunch courtesy of the EHNC and the Youth and Family Center, which was also sponsored by Hot Dog on a Stick and Council President Eric Garcetti's CD13 office.
The EHNC welcomes its newest Governing Board member -- its first-ever appointed -- Jesse Melgares, who represents Neighborhood District 10.
Melgares, a native of East Hollywood, attended Lockwood Elementary school in his youth and graduated from UCLA (where he won a full year's tuition from a Bruins basketball game free-throw contest!). He also interned at Councilmember Eric Garcetti's Council District 13 office in the Summer of 2004 and now works as a 7th Grade math and science teacher at Camino Nuevo Charter Academy in the Westlake district. He is also active in the Teach For America program.
His background in education and experience working with youth also got him selected by the EHNC as one of the co-chairs of its Youth & Education committee.
Melgares fills in the seat formerly held by Frank Hilton, who resigned from the EHNC in February due to night school commitments.
Neighborhood District 10 ( Virgil Village South) is the area of East Hollywood from Normal Avenue to the north, Hoover St. to the east, Melrose Ave. to the south and Vermont Ave. to the west. If you are a stakeholder in that area, or would like more information on the EHNC Youth & Education Committee, he can be contacted at jesse.melgares@easthollywood.net.
The event coincides with the upcoming June 3rd election and the issues surrounding Propositions 98 and 99, both of which deal with rent control and eminent domain. Featured speakers will be Dan Faller from the Apartment Owners Association (in favor of 98 and against 99) and Larry Gross from the Coalition for Economic Survival (Against 98 and in favor of 99).
