We will also have reports from Helen Leung of Council President Eric Garcetti's CD13 office and Norma Vega of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's office, as well as our LAPD Senior Lead Officers, plus our committee reports and a meeting of the EHNC's Governing Board.

EHNC, Community Volunteers Clean Up East Hollywood on April 26

On April 26, EHNC's first-ever community clean-up event, organized by EHNC Vice President and Neighborhood District 11 Representative Alfredo A. Hernandez, drew over 40 volunteers from the community, with the help of Hollywood Beautification Team (HBT) and L.A. Conservation Corps, to clean up the streets of East Hollywood as a post-Earth Day activity.

Most of the cleanup was concentrated in the southern and eastern ends of the community, though HBT also cleaned up other areas of the neighborhood that day.

Community members as well as organizations from and serving the community joined in the effort, including the L.A. Bridges II - Aztecs Rising Gang Intervention Program, The Silver Lake - Hollywood - Echo Park Metropolitan Alliance (SHEPMA), Lideres de la Comunidad en Acción and The Improviders improvisational comedy troupe.

After ctidyung up the streets in the hot, 80-plus temperature, the volunteers were treated to a free BBQ lunch courtesy of the EHNC and the Youth and Family Center, which was also sponsored by Hot Dog on a Stick and Council President Eric Garcetti's CD13 office.

Welcome Our Newest EHNC Governing Board Memeber!

The EHNC welcomes its newest Governing Board member -- its first-ever appointed -- Jesse Melgares, who represents Neighborhood District 10.

Melgares, a native of East Hollywood, attended Lockwood Elementary school in his youth and graduated from UCLA (where he won a full year's tuition from a Bruins basketball game free-throw contest!). He also interned at Councilmember Eric Garcetti's Council District 13 office in the Summer of 2004 and now works as a 7th Grade math and science teacher at Camino Nuevo Charter Academy in the Westlake district. He is also active in the Teach For America program.

His background in education and experience working with youth also got him selected by the EHNC as one of the co-chairs of its Youth & Education committee.

Melgares fills in the seat formerly held by Frank Hilton, who resigned from the EHNC in February due to night school commitments.

Neighborhood District 10 ( Virgil Village South) is the area of East Hollywood from Normal Avenue to the north, Hoover St. to the east, Melrose Ave. to the south and Vermont Ave. to the west. If you are a stakeholder in that area, or would like more information on the EHNC Youth & Education Committee, he can be contacted at jesse.melgares@easthollywood.net.
