EHNC Creates Parks For Park[ing] Day
Annual event turns parking spaces into open space
Two mini-parks were created in East Hollywood on Friday, September 18, albeit just for the day, as part of Park[ing] Day LA.
The East Hollywood Neighborhood Council took over diagonal parking spaces in Hel-Mel to create a "Rec Center," featuring a swimming pool, barbecue and drought-resistant plants. The park even got coverage in the Associated Press. The EHNC's Arts & Culture Committee also took over parking spaces along Santa Monica Blvd at Madison Avenue in front of the Bureau of Street Lighting's maintenance yard - itself identified as a potential park space for the neighborhood - which featured a garden, arts activities and free tamales. They joined some 40 other temporary parks around Los Angeles as part of Park[ing] Day LA's annual call to attention on the importance of open space for people - as opposed to space dedicated for automobiles - in our city, which has many park-poor communities such as East Hollywood.
Both of EHNC's Park[ing] Day installations attracted many visitors off the street throughout the day, especially those on foot and on bicycle.
Park[ing] Day originated in downtown San Francisco in 2005 and has since spread to cities worldwide.
The EHNC is the very first neighborhood council in Los Angeles to participate in Park[ing] Day, with two park installations in 2007.
