Did you miss our last meeting? Here's a recap of what went on!
The October 20 meeting of the East Hollywood Neighborhood Council featured Sharyn Romano, head of Hollywood Beautification Team, an organization that has been helping to clean up the streets of Hollywood for over 16 years. Romano introduced herself to the community and also made a call for people to adopt street trees that are ready to be planted. Anyone interested in adopting trees, or organizing a tree planting through HBT may call 323.962.2163.
Mark Lewis from the Los Angeles City Department of Neighborhood Empowerment also introduced himself as the new project coordinator assigned to work with the EHNC. He also reminded the NC's board members to turn in the City's budget survey by January.
Later, during the EHNC Governing Board meeting, they unaminously voted to support the historic-cultural monument status of nearby Griffith Park. They also voted to sponsor a community Thanksgiving dinner in November at the Hollywood Youth and Family Center and parking lot lights for the center as well. They also endorsed the effort to establish an Armenian American museum.
EHNC Salutes William Saroyan Event At Cahuenga Library Celebrates Centennial of Famous Author
The East Hollywood Neighborhood Council teamed up with the Cahuenga Branch Library on November 1 to present "William Saroyan: A Century of Saroyanesque," an event celebrating the work and the 100th birth anniversary of the famous Armenian American author.
The event featured a live theatre performance of excerpts from Syzygy Theatre Group's Saroyan-penned play Love's Old Sweet Song. Saroyan's nephew, Hank Saroyan spoke about the impact of his uncle's work, personal memories and presented a TV special he directed on his uncle's The Parsley Garden. Saroyan's friends Mina Kojayan reflected on the author's experiences in his cultural motherland of Armenia and Oshin Keshiskyan also shared memories of his friend. A one-hour documentary of Saroyan's life, produced by a Fresno PBS station, was also screened.
The EHNC plans to present more future literary-themed events at the Cahuenga Branch Library.
